Worm

A Glossary

Worm

A worm is a type of malicious software (malware) that is designed to replicate itself and spread across networks and systems without requiring any user intervention. Once a worm infects a system, it can use various methods to propagate itself, such as exploiting vulnerabilities in software, sending copies of itself via email, or spreading through shared drives.

Worms can have a significant impact on managed IT services by consuming network bandwidth, causing system crashes, and disrupting normal operations. They can also be used to launch further attacks, such as distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, or to steal sensitive information from compromised systems.

To protect against worms and other types of malware, managed IT services typically implement a range of security measures, including antivirus software, firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, and regular security updates and patches.

It’s also important to educate users about the risks of opening suspicious emails or downloading unknown files, and to implement strong password policies and access controls to limit the spread of malware across networks.
