What To Do if a Computer is Stuck Restarting
Computers save us time, money and effort in many areas of life and work, but when things go wrong they can create real problems – as well as causing massive frustration for users. One problem you may have experienced is at startup. You switch on as usual, but then it just gets stuck. For Windows 10 users, here are some ways to resolve this problem if it happens to you.1. Force-power your system off
There are many reasons that a restart may get stuck or freeze. The good news is that rebooting your Windows 10 computer again will usually automatically fix the problem. First of all, you’ll need to shut the computer down. If you haven’t tried this already, it’s simple to do and you don’t need specialist knowledge. Just press the Power button and keep pressing it for at least 6 seconds, or longer if it doesn’t turn off after that time.
2. Disconnect peripherals and restart
Driver conflict is one cause of reboot problems. That means that the drivers that power your attached hardware interfere with each other, causing the reboot to freeze. First of all, you’ll need to follow step #1 above, and power off your system.
Next you need to unplug any devices attached to your computer, such as USB flash drives, external hard drives, your phone or anything else you may have plugged in. The keyboard and mouse should be the only things that remain attached. When you’ve done this, try restarting again. If it solves the problem then the peripherals can be plugged in again.
Sometimes a driver conflict problem can be resolved by updating all the drivers for the hardware you attach to your computer. Updating or reinstalling these drivers can often fix restart problems. To do this:
- Go to the Windows 10 start menu
- Access the Search function (look for the magnifying glass icon alongside)
- Type in Device Manager. The option at the top of the list is what you’re looking for.
- The Device Manager window will open, showing a list of all the installed drivers.
- Right-click on the entries and select ‘update’ as your first step towards resolution. If you want to reinstall drivers, rather than updating them, then you will also see the ‘uninstall’ option.
- Restart your computer.
